Old vines tangle around my toes as I walk, forcing me to kick them off, ripping them apart or sending them flying up to slap my ankles, each time I wince, my mouth curling into a fine line and my eyes squinting, but still I stumble onwards, night thick around me with the chirping of crickets and the croaking of frogs.

I slow my breath down, it would do me no good to panic, the man's hound is scent blind, but it has ears better than a hawk-owl, and if the old thing wakes up he'll know,
slip upneedles graze my skin and bite within
pulling apart my insides
dreams whispered goodbye and i fall
